Mother in Law is in for heart trouble
My in laws live in New York and we are in Minnesota.
My Mom in law had a heart attack either Friday night or Saturday morning. She had a heart cath yesterday determining that her Aortic Valve was the cause and that there was no blockage anywhere. This morning she had the valve replaced and is apparently doing well. What we don't understand is why her cardiologist that has been following her for a few years and knew the valve was defective didn't repair it before she had a heart attack. ![]() It seems odd that it would not have been replaced when she was strong as they had to wait until she regained strength to replace it.

There are many reasons why a heart attack occurs, and it may not have been directly related to the heart valve. Quite possibly a small clot lodged there momentarily. ANY starvation in blood flow will cause the heart to react adversely, and it only needs to be for a few seconds before the muscle tissue collapses, or the beat becomes irregular (arrhythmia).
Arrhythmias can also be caused by some interruption to the electrical impulses that control the beat. I'm sure your specialist would have checked for other reasons why this could have happened, and is satisfied that the valve is the culprit. Your M-I-L is in our thoughts for a speedy recovery. |

Her valve had been deformed since birth and she had a murmur since childhood.
It just seems odd that even though she was being followed for it over the years that they wouldn't have monitored it better. The failing valve is the only reason for her heart attack (that with extra stress). There is no blockage anywhere else. I am glad that she doesn't have to have her legs filleted to get the veins for a bypass. That is one less complication she has to worry about.
